Jade Borchers is an artist from Maui, Hawai’i. Growing up in a popular tourist destination, she developed a perspective that contrasts the outsider’s view of Hawaiʻi as a paradise with the lived reality of those who call it home. This contrast informs much of her work, including her most recent photography project, Carrying Home.
Carrying Home focuses on individuals who were born and raised in Hawai’i but later moved to the mainland. Through a mix of portraiture and documentary photography, Borchers captures her subjects’ experiences of homesickness, adaptation, and resilience. Her work challenges the common perception of Hawaiʻi as merely a vacation spot by highlighting the deep-rooted identities of those who have left but continue to carry home with them.
Beyond photography, Borchers explores themes of identity and place through painting and drawing. During her undergraduate education, she created paintings based on her photography to further examine the emotions and narratives within each image.
